Complex PTSD (CPTSD)

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a psychological condition that develops from prolonged, repeated trauma, particularly during childhood or in situations where escape is difficult or impossible, such as ongoing abuse, neglect, captivity, or domestic violence. Unlike standard PTSD, which typically results from single traumatic events, C-PTSD involves additional symptoms beyond the classic PTSD symptoms of flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance. People with C-PTSD often struggle with severe difficulties in emotional regulation, maintaining stable relationships, and maintaining a coherent sense of self-worth and identity. They may experience chronic feelings of shame, guilt, and worthlessness, have trouble trusting others, and feel fundamentally different from other people. The condition can also involve dissociative symptoms, where individuals feel disconnected from their thoughts, feelings, memories, or sense of identity. While not yet included as a separate diagnosis in the DSM-5, C-PTSD is recognized by many mental health professionals and is included in the ICD-11. Treatment typically involves specialized trauma-informed therapies that address both the traumatic experiences and the developmental impacts, often requiring longer-term therapeutic relationships to help rebuild trust, emotional regulation skills, and a stable sense of self.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as combat, sexual assault, accidents, natural disasters, or other life-threatening situations. The disorder affects the brain's ability to process and recover from trauma, leading to persistent symptoms that interfere with daily functioning. Common symptoms include intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, and avoidance of trauma-related triggers. PTSD can emerge immediately after a traumatic event or may be delayed for months or even years. While not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, certain factors like previous trauma exposure, lack of social support, and pre-existing mental health conditions can increase risk. Fortunately, PTSD is highly treatable through evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), often combined with medications like antidepressants when appropriate. Early intervention and professional support significantly improve outcomes, and many people with PTSD go on to live full, meaningful lives with proper treatment.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition characterized by persistent patterns of instability in relationships, self-image, and emotions, along with significant impulsivity. People with BPD often experience intense fear of abandonment, which can lead to frantic efforts to avoid real or perceived rejection. The disorder typically involves emotional dysregulation, where individuals may experience rapid and intense mood swings, chronic feelings of emptiness, and difficulty managing anger. Identity disturbance is another hallmark feature, with individuals often struggling with an unstable sense of self and shifting goals, values, or career plans. Relationships tend to be turbulent, alternating between idealization and devaluation of others. Additional symptoms may include impulsive behaviors that could be self-damaging (such as reckless spending, substance abuse, or risky sexual behavior), recurrent suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviors, and in severe cases, brief stress-related paranoid thoughts or dissociative symptoms. While BPD can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships, it is treatable through specialized therapies like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and mentalization-based therapy, often combined with medication to address specific symptoms, and many people with BPD can achieve substantial improvement and lead fulfilling lives with proper treatment and support

Dissociative Disorders

Dissociative disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by disruptions in consciousness, memory, identity, or perception of the environment. The primary types include dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder), dissociative amnesia, and depersonalization/derealization disorder. These conditions typically develop as a psychological response to trauma, particularly severe or repeated trauma during childhood, serving as a coping mechanism that allows the mind to disconnect from overwhelming experiences. Symptoms can range from mild feelings of detachment from oneself or surroundings to more severe manifestations like memory gaps, identity confusion, or the presence of distinct personality states. While dissociative disorders can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships, they are treatable through various therapeutic approaches, including trauma-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and sometimes medication to address co-occurring conditions like depression or anxiety. Early recognition and appropriate treatment can help individuals develop healthier coping strategies and improve their overall quality of life.
